On 26 May 1966, British Guiana won its independence and was re-born as Guyana.
Today, 50 years on, much has changed. But what was life like in those pre-independence years?
Guyana50 is an oral-history project that aims to answer that question by capturing memories and testimonies from those who lived, loved and laboured in ‘BG’.
The audio recordings will be edited and published on this site, and also archived for future generations. The Black Cultural Archives in the UK has already come on board as a supporter, and will hold the files in its vaults. Discussions with Guyanese organisations and groups are also in progress.
